extrajudicial killing

Extra-Judicial Killing of Ken Niweigha and Others.

After a much publicized arrest of Mr ken Niweigha in Bayelsa state by the police, he
was summarily executed at the Bayelsa police headquarters on Wednesday, May 27, 2009
without a chance to defend himself in the court of law.

Accused of being the mastermind in the killings of some police officers which led to
the invasion and destruction of Odi town in 1999, the Nigerian government in
authorizing extra-judicial killings is sending a clear message to youths from the
region that it is better to die fighting for freedom than be killed by a lawless
system of government.

Threat to Ceasefire

On the morning of Monday, August 17, 2009, the JTF in Sama, Asari Toru Local
Government Area of Rivers state executed an unarmed man and dumped his body into the
river.

The youths from the area mobilized and carried out a reprisal attack on the army
unit responsible for the extrajudicial killing and killed a soldier and went away
with his rifle.

Such irresponsible actions by the military even if it is targeted at civilians is
not acceptable and can jeopardize the current ceasefire if repeated.
