The recently renewed amnesty offer by the Nigerian government has been hereby
rejected by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) because it
is ambiguous, dictatorial, and has not been tested in a test tube.
MEND will only consider an amnesty that is well defined, has the input of the
fighters such as a framework to negotiate root issues such as fiscal federalism and
the involvement of international mediators. Last but not the least, experiment with
Henry Okah for the rest of us to believe that it works.
The concern for the Yar'Adua administration at this time should be providing succor
to the hundreds of displaced civilians and compensating those whose homes and
livelihoods have been destroyed by indiscriminate bombardments from an ill-trained
and resentful armed forces.
